Democracy more about Power than the People

By Moh Bloggs

Democracy by some is seen as the one stop fix for all the ills of the developing world. It is in the poorest regions of the world which have been exploited for years by mis-management that the "free" choice of the people is pushed the most, by the media and the political elite of the developed world.

Power Politics in Pakistan

In the modern world a counties intellect and acceptance into the mainstream of the "global village" is measured on how democratic it is (so we are told), in reality many other factors play a role but that's a discussion for another time. Economic benefits are offered and based on democratic reforms in a particular nation.

The Phony Politics of Pakistan

Asian image Published on the Asian Image Website

By Moh Bloggs- The events of the last 36 hours in Pakistan should have shown us all something , beyond the death of Benazir Bhutto and above the billowing black smoke as Pakistan burns in rage there should have been an epiphany (a sudden insight into the reality) for the people and press Pakistan. It was a moment in History where you would hope a people would collectively stop, look and think about the situation they are in.

Benazirs Karachi Home coming Attack

However the media on mass have refused to question the very status quo that has allowed Benazir to be killed in almost broad daylight in front of scores of people. Rather as is the nature of Pakistani’s there is nothing more they love than a good old conspiracy theory, so theories of who and why someone would have Benazir killed have been doing the rounds on channels such as GEO and the like.

Benazirs Assassination- A Product of Foreign Intervention

By Majed Iqbal

No week has elapsed without Pakistani politics being thrust onto the international media in the last couple of months. The tragic event of Benazir's assassination has once again shed the spotlight on the volatile nature of Pakistani Politics; something which no one is currently aloof of. However, the debates continue to rage within Pakistan as well as outside of the country in Europe, USA and the Middle East where many Pakistanis reside on attempting to understand and reason out the events.

BENAZIR-Murdered under Musharraf's orchestrated Political Climate

Without a shadow of doubt, military despotism and anarchical conditions created by Musharraf's government echoes sole responsibility for Benazir's assassination. Despite the government highlighting Islamic extremism in the country as the root cause of the unrest and consequent assassination of the opposition leader, the Pakistani population no longer seems to be buying the argument any more.

SKY News Interview on Bhutto Assassination

In light of the current events in Pakistan with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Sky news visited Rochdale to ascertain the views of young Pakistanis on what they thought about the events of Rawalpindi.

Sky News Interview

In line with other participants from Rochdale, i also presented my views today on the current predicaments in Pakistan.

Benazir Bhutto Blames Musharraf for her Assassination

Former prime minister and chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in an attack yesterday, plunging the nation into turmoil less than two weeks before elections.

Whilst News Channels and Newspapers focus on the minute details of the tragic event, it is important to take a step back and look at some of the real causes which has led to this dire situation. The following report points fingers clearly at Musharraf and American interference in the region.

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=9QKflp5TnHg]

The gruesome assassination of the leader has plunged the country into deep political uncertainty ahead of general elections set on January 8. The next few days will be important to evaluate the steps now America and Musharraf will be taking to concoct a new plan to deliver to the Pakistani Nation.

Rochdales got the "EID FACTOR"

Thursday EID Prayer at KYP

Well well well.......................what an interesting week its been. Its not been the usual EID. In fact its been very UNUSUAL. It all began with the Rochdale Reut-e-hilal Committees announcement that Eid-ul-Adha would be on Friday. This kinda sent some shock-waves around Rochdale.

"Friday!!??" was the puzzled response with everyone looking at each other. "But Oldham, Bolton, Manchester, Bury and other areas are doing it on Thursday!" was the flabbergasted response. Hmmm...........things were not making sense!!

Anyhow, an idea propped up in the minds of a couple of taxi drivers. "Why not organise an Eid Prayer on Thursday?" was the thought (sounded quite radical and revolutionary to me!) The idea resonated with a lot of people. So it was then taken forward. Dissent with those people who are in-charge of the moon sighting and announcing Eid was clearly being expressed- not just in words- but now in actions.

Kashmir Youth project (KYP) was booked and on Thursday 20th December, an Eid prayer was organised (two jamaats) with attendees exceeding over 500. In fact there was even a collection made which amounted to £1510 in total- It was then decided to be used to purchase two Dialysis machines to send to a needy hospital in Pakistan.

"Arrange me a Marriage!"- TV Program Review

New BBC 2 show- ARRANGE ME A MARRIAGE

By Majed Iqbal

A fresh new program has hit the television screens at peak prime time viewing on the BBC 2 channel. Actually, one which has taken everyone back! Titled "Arrange me a marriage" the show attempts to matchmake couples by using the principles of "Asian" arranged marriages.

Sounds interesting! Also sounds taboo! After all, such a concept of an arranged marriage seems backdated to Victorian Times for the English population. More pertinent for the host nation is the gutter press coverage of this concept which is associated with families of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin, examples of which can be found littered in Tabloid press for "good" reading. So the idea already strikes the wrong chords with many people. "We'll stick to curries" we may hear. Nobody needs anything else of Asian People.

Dubbed as the "Desi" or Asian styled version of Blind Date, Aneela Rahman replaces Cilla Black in not just hooking up two couples but two families to arrange a relationship leading to marriage. Aneela transports "Asian" traditional methods in finding the perfect partner to be by involving the family heavily. "Go through a list of all the people you know" she says to the Brothers, Sisters, Mother, father and friends of the respective 30-something individual who is finding it difficult to settle down.

WWE, Chris Benoit and Impressionable Young Minds

DEAD- WWE stars Chris Benoit and Eddie Gurrero

Jon Ronson- Guardian Newspaper (8/12/07)

It's June and my nine-year-old son, Joel, has become obsessed with WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) on Sky Sports 3. I catch glimpses of it during the moments I look up from my paper on a Saturday morning. A wrestler yells, "I spit in the face of people who aren't cool." Then he grabs his opponent by the chin, repeatedly smashes his face into the floor, kicks him in the head, takes a big bite of an apple and spits it all over him. Joel looks impressed. Suddenly, a midget (as small people are called in the wrestling world) dressed as a leprechaun emerges from underneath the ring and scurries around to the sounds of Irish pipe music. "It's Hornswoggle!" Joel squeals, clapping.

And so on. Bodybuilders beat each other to a pulp. Women in bikinis beat each other to a pulp, sometimes with midgets on their shoulders. From time to time the wrestlers lay out their philosophies for the camera. Joel recreates fights with his WWE action figures. "Take that, Undertaker," he says, whacking him with Chris Benoit. Benoit is one of his favourite action figures because of his lovable, gap-toothed smile.

Salman Ahmad of Junoon Slams Musharraf, Benazir & Nawaz

junoonpj.jpg

By Salman Ahmad

As Pakistan descends into political chaos, much attention has been given to two leaders competing for power -- the current dictator, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, and the media-savvy former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto. The White House appears to be backing Musharraf as its best bet in the "war on terror," while much of the world's media and Western liberal elite see Bhutto as a democratic savior for a country mired in Islamic fundamentalism.

Both fail to recognize the core problem plaguing Pakistani society: Without a strong and independent judiciary, Pakistan, a nuclear-armed state, will forever be at the mercy of dictators and power-hungry politicians. Lack of oversight and institutional accountability leads to coups, counter-coups and perpetual instability.

As an artist and social activist, I have worked with the governments of both Musharraf and Bhutto on peace initiatives and socially uplifting themes. I have been disillusioned by their lack of commitment to getting real work done; they appear to spend most of their time consolidating their power bases.

On several occasions after Sept. 11, 2001, I was invited to Musharraf's house in Islamabad, and he even joined me onstage at a concert to help support a united front against extremism. I, like many members of my generation, initially believed Musharraf's commitment to introducing an era of "enlightened moderation" in Pakistan, a nation that was hijacked by religious fanatics during the American-backed military dictatorship of Gen. Mohammed Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s.

Review of Rageh Omars Al Jazeerah Report on Swat- Pakistan

DEVELOPMENTS in Swat

Rageh describes some of the numerous challenges that Pakistan is currently facing with emphasis on the the Pakistani army's major offensive in the Swat valley, against what is described as "supporters of a radical local cleric".

Gunship helicopters and heavy guns were used against mountain positions and hideouts of the "militants" in the area as the army plans to "regain" control of the area and its towns. According to the army, up to 220 fighters and 50 soldiers have been killed in just the past two weeks whilst also forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.

Rageh fails to deliberate on what has caused not only the people in swat valley, but the judges, lawyers movement, civil society, and the masses in Pakistan to turn against the army and its operations nationwide. Rageh also fails to highlight any linkage to the war on terror and how Pakistan is being used as a client state to execute policies of America in the region.

MUSHARRAF- Good, Bad OR the Ugly?

By Majed Iqbal- The last few weeks in Pakistan have seen events unfolding at roller-coaster speeds. Starting from early November’s emergency imposition, to Nawaz Sharif’s election barring at the beginning of December. In between, a whole range of issues have been quickly dealt with to resume the endeavors of the existing Governing body to maintain power.

The silence of Western governments on the current events in Pakistan comes as no surprise as they continue to support the equivalent of Saddam and Mugabe of South East Asia. Whilst Western governments have been swift in preaching well rehearsed dialogues of freedom and democracy and talks of removal of dictatorships in their Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns, responses to the crisis in Pakistan have been mild and somewhat muted.

Diplomats at the U.S. embassy in Islamabad could hardly believe what President George W. Bush said to anchor Charles Gibson on ABC "World News" Nov. 20. He described Pakistan’s President Musharraf as "somebody who believes in democracy" and declared: "I understand how important he is in fighting extremists and radicals."

Sudan, the British Teacher and the Teddy Bear

By Majed Iqbal

The last couple of days have seen intense news coverage on an issue which has propelled out of proportion. The British teacher, Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool faces a jail sentence in Sudan for “allegedly” insulting Islam by letting her class of seven-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad as part of a school project.

Gillian, who works in the Unity High School, a British school where she taught the children of Sudanese professionals, expatriates and oil workers was arrested for “blaspheming” against Islam by allowing to name the teddy bear after the name of the Prophet of Islam. The story has struck an opportunity, once again in the press, to debate and air views over the “backwardness” of Islamic Culture, rules, customs and heritage which seems not to be synchronized with Western Civilisation standards and values which permeate many parts of the world.

Shock and horror is what can be currently described as the response of British people and press. How can such a menial issue of naming a teddy bear after a religious icon lead to barbaric punishments of lashing the victim? Why such fanaticism by Sudanese Authorities? How can such actions by the government be justified? Are these people even civilized? These are just some of the questions which will be circulating the minds and conscience of the British public coupled with utter disgust.

Musharraf- Foreign interests over National interests

Musharraf steps down as Chief of Army Staff

Musharraf stepped down from Cheif of army staff yesterday and was sworn in today as The President of the country by his hand picked Judges from the Supreme court. His previous post was handed over to Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, 55, a former head of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, another loyalist to Musharraf.

So what has changed? More power to Musharraf as President. What has not changed? Musharrafs subservience to America and its plans for Pakistan which he has orchestrated on Pakistani terrain.

Once again, Leaders like Musharraf have not learnt from History on allying themselves with Foreign powers from the rest of the muslim world. His cliency to America is so dear that he even was prepared to leave the Army; one which has served for over 40 years to bow down to American dictates and execute Americam led policies in the region.

What is the "shelf life" of such an agent? Maybe he should consult Nawaz Sharif

Manchester Demonstration calling for Khilafah In Pakistan

Hizb ut Tahrir Britain called the Muslims of Manchester to rally outside the local Pakistani Conculate in protest at the recent events in Pakistan. As part of the campaign to "Stop Musharraf Destroying Pakistan", HTB had organised a day of protest across the country.

[slideshow id=432345564253005452&w=426&h=320]

The protesters raised their opposition to General Musharraf's actions in power, particularly

- The continued military offensive against his own people in the North and West of Pakistan
- entirely at the behest of America
- His flouting of the rule of law in Pakistan by Musharraf and his partners
- The fact that Pakistan's rulers are not chosen its people but by America and Britain
- The double standards which allow criminals such as Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif to keep returning to loot the country of its wealth

The demonstrators called for a complete change in Pakistan - not just a change of leadership but for the dawn of a new system of governance, the Khilafah State, which would have an independent political will and would rule in the interests of its people - not those of foreign powers.

Why the situation in Pakistan 'matters' to US & UK

It has now been nearly two weeks since Musharraf imposed the emergency in Pakistan. The state of affairs has been widely reported through the international press as being an internal problem within Pakistan. However, closer examination reveals that the situation in Pakistan was staged managed by the US and the UK in light of maintaining Musharrafs grip on the nation and prolonging his Presidency.

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=_OCcFf2PchI]

These events occurred a day after Admiral William J. Fallon, head of US Central Command met with Musharraf and other leaders. The talks were kept secret but on the 5th November 2007, the Guardian newspaper revealed that in a phone call, Musharraf had discussed emergency rule with Prime Minister Gordon Brown the night before he declared the state of emergency.

Demonstrations in Pakistan for Removing SYSTEM

PROTEST COVERAGE

There has been mass mobilisation in Pakistan calling for the removal of Musharraf over the last two weeks. Hizb-ut-Tahrir Pakistan too has been active in demonstrations calling not only for the removal of Musharraf, but indeed the entire system and to be replaced by the Khilafah Government.

Hizb-ut-Tahrir Pakistan Rally in rawalpindi

The above demonstration took place in Rawalpindi, amidst the emergency, where protests are being attacked and broken up by state forces. The slogan on the banner reads "Remove Musharraf, Bring back the Khilafah.

NASHEEDS, Darfur & Western Foreign policy

The ‘Concert for Peace In Darfur’ held in Wembley Arena London, has been hailed by some to be a great way for Muslims to help other Muslims. This concert featured as the main performer, the nasheed ‘artist’ Sami Yusuf. Who visited Darfur, with an Islamic charity organisation. He has publicised the plight of the Muslims in Darfur and in many ways re-enforced the narrative spun by the British government as to what happening in Darfur. This is hardly surprising as one the events sponsors is the British Foreign Office.

Some Muslims, view the holding of such concerts as a charitable deed that Islam deems to be praiseworthy. They see it is an attempt to help Muslims that are less fortunate. More aware Muslims realise that often there is more than meets the eye when it comes to such events. The context needs to be examined before a sound judgement as how to view such events can be made.

Western Foreign Policy

Although the colonialist nations like the US, Britain and France make claims that they are against human suffering and misery they are ones that are usually cause it. It is blatantly obvious that they hold the interests of their wealthy capitalist classes and corporations dearer than the lives of people. One only needs to look at Iraq as an example. The case of Iraq shows that oil and natural resources mean more to these Governments than the blood of people. A figure of 650,000 is often stated as the number of Iraqi civilians that have died as result of the colonial conquest of Iraq. This figure was the average used in the report published in the Lancet, the upper range was stated to be 942,000. The report was published some time ago and the figure has probably reached more than a million innocent lives lost since then.

Musharraf’s “Second Coup”

By Majed Iqbal- It was too smooth to believe that Bhutto had secured a ‘deal’ with Musharraf to rule in Pakistan in Partnership. It ran too smooth when Nawaz Sharif was kicked out of the country on his return to Pakistan. It was too smooth to believe that Musharraf had secured his presidency with a majority in Parliament. So was the emergency situation that occurred on Saturday a predictable outcome?

Police Brutality during protests

Yes indeed. The signs of a desperate ruler clinging on to his last reigns of power, by ‘any means necessary’, was visible with all the actions under taken by the Military General and self professed Chief Executive/President/ Chief of Army Staff and pioneer of the prophetic ‘Enlightened Moderation’ philosophy, Pervez Musharraf.

Sunday 4th November saw Musharraf imposing emergency, to reassert his flagging authority in response to what he said was to ‘Islamic militancy and to the 'paralysis of government by judicial interference'. Musharraf sacked and replaced the Chief Justice, house arrested all other judges failing to give oath, and re-elected a new fresh subservient bench of judges throughout the country who gave legitimacy to his previously illegal moves.

Al Jazeera Report on Pakistans Emergency Situation

Pakistan was once again flung into the international spotlight on Saturday 3rd November as Musharraf declared a state of 'Emergency'. The action to reassert his flagging authority was, he said, a response to Islamic militancy and to the 'paralysis of government by judicial interference'. He said that his country's sovereignty was at stake.

Over 500 senior party activists, Judges, lawyers, Human Rights activists were arrested, troops poured on to city streets and television and radio stations were taken off the air. Musharraf also suspended the constitution and fired the chief justice, Muhammad Iftikhar Chaudhry, who spearheaded a powerful mass movement against him earlier this year.

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=BHzOuQW38ek]

International pressure was minimal, especially from the powers which brokered the deal between Bhutto and Musharraf in a power sharing agreement to run the country- namely America and Britain.

How Northern Rock can save Christmas

By Andrusha Wickermaratne

“Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man’s hat………” (traditional) Yes it’s the time of year for all good Christians to fatten the goose, get fatter themselves and spend pennies (I mean in shops). Thousands of them, millions of them. Whether some pennies go to a deserving old man, woman or child is another matter.

Shops, airports and various public spaces are all decked out with Christmas trees and other seasonal paraphernalia. Department stores are exhorting people to spend money with increasing desperation. And it is desperation at that, as this year is predicted to be a very low spending Christmas. Nevertheless, this is the time when we really consume.

For millions of Christians in Britain, Christmas is a time of profound spiritual experience signifying the birth of Jesus, and a time of magic and excitement for children. However, shorn of its spiritual dimension for the vast majority of people (once a year visits to church with a hangover doesn’t count), it is a time when we pay homage to our favourite God – Consumerism. And who is this round jolly man in a red and white coat being pulled by reindeers? Why it’s the Cocoa Cola Santa Claus.

Whilst a quick internet search of Santa Claus reveals a man by the name of Nicholas; a shy Christian leader from Myra (in modern day Turkey) in the 4th Century AD, who wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it, the present day incarnation is an invention of a 1938 Cocoa Cola advertisement. What better way to show what Christmas is really all about than to align the apparently genuinely kind act of a Christian leader with the profits of the world’s largest soft drinks company. The very act of giving as a form of human behaviour with intrinsic, selfless and unconditional merit is not enough. It has to be sponsored by coke without which Christmas is simply not the Real Thing.

Rochdale Central Mosque 'Investigated'

Rochdale Central Mosque 'Investigated'

InvestigationBy Majed Iqbal

A new Report released by Policy Exchange, an independent think tank, titled “the Hijacking of British Islam” has targeted the central (Idara) Mosque in Rochdale, labeling it as a promoter of extremist ideas. The mosque was mentioned out of a list of 100 organisations and institutions that were visited and cited as a worrying problem of extremist penetration of mosques and other key institutions of the British Muslim community.

The Research was conducted During 2006 and 2007 by four Muslim research teams traveling to towns and cities across the UK. They visited a large number of important Islamic religious institutions, including leading mosques, to determine the extent to which literature inculcating Muslim separatism and hatred of nonbelievers was accessible in those institutions - both in terms of being openly available and also being obtainable 'under the counter'.

The report belittled the achievement awarded to Hafiz Ikram in May 2007 by the local MP, Paul Rowen, for ‘Services to the Community and to young people over the past thirty years at the annual ‘Rochdale Sport For All’ awards with taints of hypocrisy after, what the researchers believe, was the finding and availability of ‘Extremist’ literature. Here references were being made to books of Islamic knowledge, Shariah rules regarding women’s issues and questions pertaining to the celebration of western festivals and traditions.

The effort to stigmatise the Muslim community as problematic and in need of reformation has been consistently propagated over the last couple of years. In the last year, Ruth Kelly’s misadventure of formulating what she called a “British version of Islam” was met with bitter resentment and seen as a guise to ‘revise’ aspects of Islam which does not fit to the bubble of Britishness.

Schwarzenegger- Its only a leaf!!

By Majed Iqbal- Hollywood star turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is once again in the news. But this time ,not for his handling of the fire-rage sweeping away in his constituency but for defending something from his past. The actor turned Governer suggested that cannabis is not a drug. Schwarzenegger was pictured smoking marijuana in his 70s bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron.

Schwarzenegger

But he said in an interview: "I didn't take any drugs. “When told that he had admitted to smoking marijuana, Mr. Schwarzenegger replied: "That is not a drug. It's a leaf." Mr. Schwarzenegger seems to share similar experiences with Tory leader David Cameron, who met recently to discuss green issues and who also like Schwarzenegger refused to comment on his stint with drugs during his university life. This may explain Schwarzenegger’s position on refusing to condemn politicians who took drugs, saying it was not necessarily a matter of public interest.

"A politician's job is to do what's best for the people and to improve the country, the economy, the environment. Why should I care if a politician takes sleeping pills every night so long as he can do his job?"

BHUTTO defends Rally presence

BHUTTO defends Rally presence

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has defended her decision to stage a homecoming street parade last week, despite being forewarned about a possible terrorist attack. The attack killed 165 people and injured a further 500. But some say a contributing factor was Benazir Bhutto's thirst for mass public recognition.

KARACHI BLASTS- Ballot or the Bullet?

By Majed Iqbal

“There are some powerful figures behind the assassination attempt on me”. These were the words of Benazir Bhutto in response to her "brush with martyrdom" during her explosions-ridden homecoming rally in Karachi last week which left over 140 dead and 500 seriously injured.
Her widely anticipated arrival on Pakistani soil, welcomed by over thousands of supporters was turned into scenes of carnage, death and destruction. After striking the ‘deal’ with the ‘uniformed’ President Musharraf, her comeback was set to mark a new era in Pakistani Politics with promises of restoring civilian rule in the country of 160 million with general elections looming in the horizon in January.

However, her welcoming was a bitter deja-vu of the reality of the country’s Politics which has been plagued with violence from state level to street level, both under Dictatorships and ‘Democracies’.Yasmin, whose husband was a victim in the blast said “We will never forgive Benazir for this. Why did she not take the helicopter provided to her? She put so many people’s lives in danger just to show off her popularity.” Her comments echoed concerning facts on Benazir’s continual popularising of potential attacks on her arrival and despite being warned by PPP activists on the day on the arrest of a man with a suicide belt about an hour before the attack. It begs the question- why did the PPP not pull Bhutto out of the procession?

It begs the question- why did the PPP not pull Bhutto out of the procession?

The incident has sparked off a furor of tit for tat statements by politicians who were more interested in scoring political capital from the event to suit their narrow agendas rather than showing serious concern over the emotional stress and loss of lives that those families affected were experiencing.

Benazir pounced on the chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, accusing him of ‘protecting the killers’.

‘We will also say all this was a conspiracy. Ms Bhutto’s husband hatched a conspiracy and they implemented it” said Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain “The proof: Ms Bhutto went into her armoured vehicle minutes before the bombs exploded.”

Resuming her replay of her internationally paraded dialogues used in London , Washington and Dubai , Bhutto blamed Islamic extremism as a major cause for the turmoil in Pakistan- throwing the spotlight on the intelligence agencies, alleging that Afghan mujahideen had “infiltrated the ISI and the country’s administration. They have a tacit support of senior officials.” She said.

Despite an investigation underway by the Pakistani government Bhutto once again has aligned herself with her supporting states, the UK and US to launch an ‘independent’ investigation into the incidents shedding further light on her strategic alliances fostered in this new ‘deal’ to revive her tattered political career. "I am justified in demanding a probe into the blasts by countries like the United States and United Kingdom as my own government is not capable of doing these investigations fairly"

One thing is for sure from the tragic events that occurred on 18th October- both the Ballot and the bullet have historically been served to facilitate the aspirations of the power hungry elite- the cost of which the ordinary man on the street has paid with their lives. The only benefactors today are a uniform-less Musharraf, a reinvigorated Benazir Bhutto and a happy western hemisphere.

Omar Metwally in New Line Cinema's Rendition

The War on Terror has allowed Many states in the world to introduce draconian, in-humane, distasteful, un-thinkable and previously illegal measures to combat the rise of "terrorism". Already thousands of Muslims internationally have become victims of 'Extra-ordinary Rendition'- being taken away to secret locations in client countries of western states for torture and confession.

The Movie "Rendition" closely examines the relationship of America who outsources torture of an American Citizen who is Muslim, to a Middle Eastern country where all forms of brutality are legitimate to make prisoners speak and confess to statements which are given in duress and compulsion.

The movie raises questions on the moral and legal legitimacy of these actions. Is violence the answer to further violence? How can Powerful states talk about winning hearts and minds of nations when it uses such tactics on mostly innocent people 'suspected' of 'Terrorism' based on flimsy evidence?

We must not forget that Britain is also complicit in aiding America in this cause as was widely reported last year with the use of secret jails located in Europe. The concept of the movie has huge implications for muslims livingin Britain too and should be the subject of discussion and debate with the wider society.

RAMADHAN MESSAGES-Week 4- Reflection

RAMADHAN MESSAGES-Week 4- Reflection

Ramadan is a month of reflection and thinking; a month like no other where every Muslim will think about his actions and invoke Allah (SWT) for forgiveness. Ramadan should also be the month to reflect on the history of Islam and the greatness Islam brought to the Muslims of the past. Every Muslim must take heed from the Ramadan’s of the past and realise that it was the implementation of Islam in life’s affairs that made us great. The true strength of the Muslims was the Islamic State (Khilafah); wherein Islam was spread throughout the world to places such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

Learning the Lessons of UNITY from RAMADHAN

Learning the Lessons of UNITY from RAMADHAN

By Majed Iqbal
As all of us have been been witnessing in the press and Media lately, both nationally and internationally, the heavy attempts made to malign the call for Shariah in the Muslim World as outdated, non-workable and depicted as not being the aspirations of the people. We have seen attempts in Britain to divide the community into those who are moderate (non-political groups who tow the government line) and those who are branded as Extreme (Islamic political groups who challenge foreign policy and advocate shariah for the Muslim World). Internationally, powers have tried to strike a wedge by dividing the muslims on shia and sunni lines as seen in Iraq.Despite these cheap efforts exhausted, the muslim world has continuoulsy called for Islam as the heart of any solution.

Ramadhan evidences our Unity in Worship and Fasting. However, the Muslim Ummah lacks the Political unity which Islam calls for. Every Muslim acknowledges that their is disunity and this has been a major cause for our misfortunes. The British Foreign Minister addressed the British Prime Minister shortly before World War II in Parliament and said "We must put an end to anything which brings about any Islamic unity between the sons of the Muslims. As we have already succeeded in finishing off the Khilafah, so we must ensure that there will never arise again unity for the Muslims, whether it be intellectual or cultural unity."

Lord Curzon, British Foreign Minister, in front of the House of Commons after the Lausanne Treaty of July 24th, 1924 said

"The situation now is that Turkey is dead and will never rise again, because we have destroyed its moral strength, the Khilafah and Islam."

"The situation now is that Turkey is dead and will never rise again, because we have destroyed its moral strength, the Khilafah and Islam."

Do we not see the significance of these statements for us today?

Islam demands muslim unity as a MUST for its prosperity, its life, its strength, its honour, its dignity, its power and its existence. Working to maintain this has been charged as one of the highest obligations in Islam.
Imam Muslim narrated from Abdullah bin 'Umar who said that the Prophet (saw) said, "One who dies without having bound himself by an oath of allegiance (to a Khalifah) will die the death of one belonging to the days of ignorance (Jahiliyah)".

Ahmed and Ibn abi 'Asim narrated that the Prophet (saw) said, "Whosoever dies and he does not have over him an Imaam, he dies the death of Jahiliyyah".

This grave matter of Unity under an established and legitimate Islamic Leadership was fully understood by the best of generations, the sahaba- Ridwaan-Allah-alayhi ajma-een.

Ali ibn abi Taalib (r.a.) said, "The people will not be straightened except by an Imaam (Khaleefah), whether he is good or bad". (Bayhaqi, No. 14286, Kanz ul-ummal)

Abdullah ibn 'Umar (r.a.) said "The people in the Ummah will not suffer even if they were oppressors and sinful if the rulers were guided and were guiding. But the people in the Ummah will suffer and perish even if they were guided and were guiding if the rulers were oppressors and sinful". (Abu Nu'aim narrated in 'Hulayat Awliyyah.)

'Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a.) said, "Laa Islam bi laa Jamaa'ati wa laa jamaa'ati bi laa Imaarah, wa laa Imaaratu bi laa sam'on wa taa'ah". "There is no Islam without a community, and there is no community without a leadership, and there is no authoruty without hearing and obeying".

It is a central tenent and pillar of Islam to have this Unification under the Khilafah State, with an appointed Khaleefah who rules by Ahkam Shariah.

It is up to us to Work for this and fulfill this noble task.

RAMADHAN MESSAGES Week 3- Security and Family

RAMADHAN MESSAGES Week 3- Security and Family

Ramadhan is a time to share the blessings of Allah (SWT) with those closest to you; your family. The knowledge that one’s home, possessions, honour and family are safe fills a person with a sense of peace and tranquillity. The Muslim world, ravaged by war and illegal occupation, will never feel this peace and tranquillity, whilst there is interference from foreign countries in their lands.

The Prophet of Allah (SAW) said in a Hadith: “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself

We must ensure that we expose the Western foreign policy, which leads the Muslim world into destruction. How can it be that during this blessed month we sit and enjoy tranquil times with our families whilst not speaking out for those of our brothers being oppressed in the Muslim world?

The SAD SIGHT of Muslim Youth during Ramadhan (Rochdale)

By Mohammed Imran

Asalaamualaikum, I am sorry to have to share this with you during the blessed month of Ramadhan. While doing security outside Neeli Mosque I was thinking it has been a quieter a time this Ramdhan in regards to misbehaving youth especially after the Gang fighting from last year but then I read something like this.

"Jean Ashworth has slammed Rochdale Police following a call she made about a group of between 30 and 40 Asian youths she witnessed smashing a car up on Woodbine Street on Sunday evening (30 September).

The car had been abandoned in the street two weeks ago and Councillor Ashworth had reported it last week when there was very little damage to it other than a dent on the drivers side. However, the car was still in the same place when she took her grandson home last night and she saw that the front window had been smashed.

Later in the evening she witnessed youths running down the road hurtling bricks through all of the windows, she immediately telephoned 999, and was given a log number, and went outside to hear the youths saying they were coming back to "torch it" at 9.15pm. Councillor Ashworth telephoned 999 again and asked for an immediate police response as the large gang were "really intimidating".

Councillor Ashworth said: "It was a really frightening situation, I stood outside as my car was parked opposite. Two police officers arrived and were quite shocked to see the large number of youths and also the amount of damaged caused to the car. I expressed my concern and asked if the car would be removed, they said they didn't know and had to wait for instructions from headquarters.

The officers left the scene at 10.25pm without any confirmation the car would be removed.Councillor Ashworth said in response: "I am furious at the police, the car should have been removed."

Then again maybe I should not be surprised as I also see in the mosque youngsters being kicked out because they misbehave during Tarawih. They claim then they have nothing else to do so it leads to activity like vandalism and fighting. Unfortunately this does not show us in a good light. While we sit in the mosque praying Tarwih outside our youngsters are causing havoc. You may say I am being over dramatic and this is just a one off case or even a slur just to make us look bad. Personally I believe there is a problem.

Is it not our duty as Muslims to work towards a better society starting with building a better community. How can we do that by letting this go on. There is an idea which I do have to say was discussed in a few circles last year but nothing ever accounted from it. Street team during Tarawih time. This would involve a number of small groups of brothers walking and driving around their respective local neighbourhoods. Milkstone, Deeplish, Newbold, Wardle, Spotland. By doing this as a start we can be looking after our neighbourhood by having a presence. More importantly we can also engage with those who are walking around. By speaking to the young brothers who are walking around we can chat to them about what's going on, what they are doing and what others are doing.

Who knows this little bit of Dawah could help them and in turn help our community. Maybe this can be trailed in the last week of Ramadhan this year and if it works we can fully implement next year. I would rather this happen than the police to get involved and leave the youngsters with nothing else than a record and an ego.

The ‘GENERALS’ way OR the High way

By Majed Iqbal- On Friday 28th September, Pakistan's Supreme Court declared the much awaited decision facing the Pakistani nation of shortlisting the candidates running for the Presidency. They ruled that President Pervez Musharraf could run again in the upcoming presidential elections, even though he is also currently serving as army chief.

The decision was met with fierce opposition from the enthused Lawyers movement who took centre stage in Islamabad in Protest and rioting against the edict of the court- which they believed went against the current sentiments of the nation. Rigorous debate and discussion arose over the TV networks in Pakistan airing astonishment at the courts response and analysing the consequences of the decision on the future of the country's politics.

The situation was further made dire on Saturday when the Government cut off the Media from displaying any scenes when the protests began taking place. A spokesperson for Geo declared “Since the morning Geo, Aaj and ARY were off the air”.

The Lawyers movement rallied on Saturday and challenged the courts verdict on the grounds that the constitution forbids permanent government employees (including military officers) from seeking elective office and that a two years wait was required after resignation or retirement from a government post before seeking a presidential bid.Musharraf's bid for re-election has been highly controversial as he faces growing unpopularity nationally, failing miserably to resonate and connect with the masses.

The situation was further made dire on Saturday when the Government cut off the Media from displaying any scenes when the protests began taking place. A spokesperson for Geo declared “Since the morning Geo, Aaj and ARY were off the air”.

The Lawyers movement rallied on Saturday and challenged the courts verdict on the grounds that the constitution forbids permanent government employees (including military officers) from seeking elective office and that a two years wait was required after resignation or retirement from a government post before seeking a presidential bid.

Musharraf's bid for re-election has been highly controversial as he faces growing unpopularity nationally, failing miserably to resonate and connect with the masses. From the wars waged in Afghanistan, tampering with the constitution, opening up Pakistan to the FBI, allowing America to use logistical and airspace usage, rigging the 2002 Presidential elections, using the countries own army to fight in Waziristan in the tribal belt area, sacking the chief Justice, massacring over 1000 men, women, children and elderly in the Lal Masjid issue and fulfilling American orders by bringing Benazir into Power; Musharraf remains a rebel without a cause, fighting to gain balance of power in a time where political events are heavily scoring against him.

With Calculated manouvres, Musharraf in 2002 inserted a number of provisions in the constitution that exempted him from law, enabling him to combine the offices of president and army chief, and hold both titles.

Furthermore, with the recent devlopments, Musharraf has focused on appointing loyalists to key military positions to ensure his grip on powe beginning with the recent appointment of Nadeem Taj as head of the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency whilst further key promotions are imminent, with both the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee and the vice chief of army staff due to retire next month. These appointments are critical, as the military will play a pivotal role on Musharrafs re-election as president and after if he stays on as army chief.

These have been the unfortunate scenes where the use of brutal force to quell any form of Political dissent were paraded by a goernment which talks of enlightened moderation. The scenes on saturday further highlighted the growing discontent with between the ruling elites and the masses. These events bring home the true colours of a ruler who believes firmly in exercing might rather than thought in dealing with Political matters.

The Prophet of Islam (saw) spoke the truth when he said: "The best of your imams (leaders) are those whom you love and they love you and who pray for you and you pray for them, and the worst of your imams are those whom you hate and they hate you and you curse them and they curse you. [Muslim] (narrated by Auf bin Malik al Ash'jayi)

Once again, the nation of Pakistan thrusts itself onto the World scene as Political commentators debate and discuss its future. These Commentators are not just restricted to those from Pakistan but extend internationally pursuing the unfolding events over the Upcoming Elections Issue with a detailed eye.

In the Video report, the analysts deal with the latest news that over 51% of Pakistanis want Shariah Law as the only Source, 24% said that it should be one of the Sources and a meagre 6% stated it should not be a source.

The upcoming Elections in Pakistan are being watched and supervised by external powers to make sure their conjured up formula for a Pakistan which is favourable to Western Interests in the region will be fulfilled. These Elections should also be at the height of importance for the Muslims of Pakistan to reject the formation of a government which will act on behalf of foreign powers rather than securing the intrests of Muslims.

Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud and Tirmidhi reported on the authority of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "Each one of you is a guardian and you are all responsible about your guardianship, the Imam is a guardian of the people and he is responsible for his guardianship of the people."

RAMADHAN MESSAGES- WEEK 2- Brotherhood

The messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “A Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim. He will not oppress him, abandon him in difficulties, forsake him, or insult him”In the month of Ramadan, Muslims will sit and eat together offering food, good advice and many prayers for their brothers and sisters in Islam. The concept of brotherhood means that we must never forget the suffering of our brothers and sisters around the world, whether they be in Iraq, Afghanistan or Africa.

Ramadan is the time to remember the brotherhood of the Muslims in our duas and in our discussions with others. It is of vital importance to understand the reasons behind the oppression of the Muslims the world over; the corruption and tyranny of the Muslims rulers.

The series, titled “Ramadhan, Unity and the need for Khilafah”, will celebrate the unity of the Ummah that is unified in its worship of Allah Ta’ala all over the world during this blessed month.

We will warn against the repeated attempts to divide our Ummah across the world on lines of Shia and Sunni, moderate and extremist, and nation states. We will address how our Ummah lacks political unity due to the absence of the Khilafah, unity that all the Ummah craves, and unity that would bring strength to the Ummah in obedience to Allah.
